One of the powerful things about a Wiki is the ability to collaboratively generate well structured and linked articles. If I make a statement that references another important idea, I can simply enclose that phrase in double square brackets and that phrase will be displayed as a link.

If you click on the link and that word or phrase does not yet exist as a wiki article, the wiki engine will propose that you create a new wiki page.

So, if you have an idea that's important, make it into a link using the double square bracket convention and either make a 'target' page, or leave it for the community. Wiki's make this easy, so give it a try.

THE MESSAGE
All the pieces are in place - right now - to raise Literacy levels anywhere in the world. The only meaningful barrier to success is a lack of understanding that such a thing is possible. The teachers needed to facilitate 21st Century skillsets are ready, willing and able. The course content is available and affordable. The technology to deliver such course content is available and affordable.

THE APPROACH
The Global Literacy Foundation's 'Literacy Now!' campaign follows a straightforward methodology:

1. Identify Literacy Projects & Initiatives
2. Ensure that such Projects & Initiatives meet our criteria for success
3. Bring public awareness and funding to these well qualified Projects & Initiatives

The traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability to read and write, or the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak.

In modern contexts, the word refers to reading and writing at a level adequate for communication, or at a level that lets one understand and communicate ideas in a literate society, so as to take part in that society.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has drafted the following definition:

"Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society."

Getting involved in this site takes several steps. If you're just browsing the site there's no need to do anything special. You can type a term into the search box at the top right to quickly find what you want. Most people start by using the menu links to browse the site.
At the top of each page there's a menu that will take you to common areas of interest.
On the right side of the browser window you will see a navigation menu. Follow the links that interest you.
In the near future, we will be developing 'groups' and organizing and selecting materials that are relevant to various interest groups.

Our educational services and resources are provided for the Global Literacy audience and other interested educators, practitioners, consumers and providers of education.

Users who log in receive access to private content selected and provided for their use. Aonymous Users receive access only to the public content.

Sign up for an account by registering. Click the 'Login/Register' link on the upper right menu. Then click on 'Create new account', enter a username or e-mail address and password. Make sure your password has more than 6 characters. Follow the prompts to complete the process.
